"Warsaw.ap. A 24-year-old Berliner threw away his passport in Poland after visiting a concentration camp memorial and no longer wanted to speak German."
taz, April 21, 2004, News, p. 2
After reading this newspaper article, Anne Schülke visited the Stutthof concentration camp memorial in Poland together with photographer Annette Jonak. In 2005, together with director Ingo Toben, she showed notes and photos of the trip at a reading at the Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf.
Shortly afterwards, she sought out the young Berliner, traveled to Poland again, spoke to people in Gdansk, Sztutowo and Nowy Dwor, wrote down assumptions and thought about the politics of remembrance. Together with Stephan Sachs and students from the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel and the musician and artist Detlef Klepsch, she developed an installation consisting of readings, video and sound at the Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf in 2006, making the new material accessible.
"Ludwig" was ultimately an attempt to turn the research into a text.
